Massage routine for self care

Have you ever returned home from work feeling ready to dive straight into a restful weekend but one look at the calendar and you realize, it's only Tuesday!

Well, what if we said that there was a way to achieve that instant energy boost to keep you going through the week or to have a relaxing evening where you can unwind all the stress from the day and feel more calm?

Why you should include self massage in your daily routine

Let us introduce you to the almost-heavenly practice of self-massage. It’s as simple as it sounds! A self-massage is a technique in Eastern medicine that has been extremely underrated in self-care. It talks about massages as being a part of your regular, if not daily, routine because of their innumerable benefits for the mind, body, and soul.

If you’re new to the world of self-massage and massage oils, Empress Naturals is the best guide you could ask for.

Empress Naturals

From expert advice, tips & tricks, and organic product recommendations, we’re putting together the ultimate wellness and self care guides for you to check out. Read on to know more about the self-massages and we decode the benefits and correct ways for you to massage yourself!

Shhh…. The Secret to Self-Massage

In the States, we often view massage as a luxury experience to be indulged into once every couple of weeks for which an entire day (colloquially known as 'self-care day') is carved out.

Self-massage your way to health

Alternatively,  massage is linked with body pain and is often used to treat a physical ailment. It's not something that we practice on a regular basis. Self- Massage, on the other hand, is an essential component of self-care for the body and psyche in the East.

The secret to self-massage is consistency; if we only attempt something once, we never have the opportunity to reap its full benefits. For example, when you make a vow to start exercising again, you would never make the assumption that you are going to see changes in your appearance and mood in one day, would you?

Similarly, when starting a routine that prioritizes self-care, we have to be mindful about the time and effort we put into maintaining these routines to gain the best benefits.

And if you ask us, a feeling of oneness with the self is definitely worth the effort. Especially if you love lathering yourself with oils and waking up refreshed with silky smooth skin!

Elizabeth's self care massage tips

Elizabeth Koshy - Founder of Empress Naturals

We asked Elizabeth Koshy, our CEO, how she makes time every day to do her self-massage, despite being busy all day.

“If you really think about it, we have all elongated our nighttime self-care routines since COVID 19 because it’s the only time that we get to reflect on everything that we did in the day.
I find it to be extremely centering. And that’s how I have been able to make self-massage a regular practice. I directly relate massages with a sense of grounding and space for reflection.
Every night, after my skincare you’ll find me on my couch browsing the news while I massage my body with the Calming Massage Oil by Empress Naturals. It’s literally the perfect last step in my night time routine because as soon as I am done, I am ready for bed! And, I have been getting the best sleep ever since!”

THE RIGHT WAY TO SELF-MASSAGE

3 GOLDEN RULES:

  1. Find the right oil blends for your massage. Every oil, be it carrier or essential, has a purpose in your massage.

Find the products with the right oils for your needs or make your own. Use our
guide to pick the right massage oil for you!

  2. Warm the oil. This is common practice for most self-massages regardless of the oil you use.

It allows to offset any cold properties of the surrounding environment or your body, leading to better absorption of the massage oil into your skin.

  3. Move from the head down. You might choose to massage different parts of your body on different days or even opt for a full body massage every day (trust us, it only takes 15 minutes).

Whatever your choice of massage, always start from the top and move to lower body parts. Move from your body extremities towards your heart, to stimulate direct blood flow. Move from your feet towards your thighs or neck to heart.

How to Self-Massage Your Head

A face and head self-massage will help you feel calm and rejuvenated, whether you suffer from tension migraines or are simply searching for a method to alleviate stress

Here are some of the best of our self-massage suggestions for migraines, focusing on the face and scalp:

Forehead

With both thumbs on your cheekbones, hold your head at either extremity, close to your ears.

Make circular movements with your fingertips starting outward at your temples and move closer till the middle of your forehead until your fingers connect.

Scalp

Place your palms on either side of your scalp. Press your head upward, (towards the center where your hair part is) for a few seconds each before letting go.

Repeat all over until your complete scalp has been massaged.

Empress Product Picks for Head Massage

Empress Naturals’ Naked Collection Prickly Pear Oil is the ideal product to do your head or scalp self-massage.

Prickly pear is incredibly revered for its nourishing properties, not only for your skin but also your hair!

Infact, Elizabeth uses it every other night as part of her massage routine to give her hair some extra love and shine.

How to Self-Massage Your Neck and Shoulders

If you’re spending hours at a desk staring into your computer, chances are your neck and shoulders are craving some extra TLC. A neck or shoulder massage is what you need to reverse any hunchback or bad posture!

Middle trapezius

Use your fingertips to locate your middle trapezius - it's the point on your back where your neck and shoulders connect. Apply pressure for 10-30 seconds before letting go. Repeat this action as needed until you sense pain reduction or deepened relaxation.

Upper trapezius

Bend your right arm at the elbow such that you are able to feel your right upper trapezius.

Start from the outside of your trap muscle aka your shoulders and make your way inwards, towards your neck with your fingers. Repeat several times slowly until you sense your trap muscles soften. Repeat the same on your right side.

IF YOU NEED MORE REASONS…

We’ve given you all the reasons on how a self-massage will benefit you. But if you need more reasons on why it’s the right self-care move you need to make, here’s a list of incredible benefits it will have on your lifestyle!

Making time to practice self-massage is more than just about body care or wellness. It is a way to show yourself more love, a way to respect and care for your mind and spirit.

Self massage is self care

It is also a method of maintaining optimal health from within through skin. The skin serves as both a protective barrier and a portal for nourishing our bodies aka it is the perfect organ to get in touch with your inner self.

Whatever you're going through, self-massage will bring you back into balance. It boosts circulation, promotes organ function, aids in detoxification, and improves sleep. It also has numerous other possible advantages, such as slowing aging, nourishing your epidermis, and healing.
