The ultimate guide to pick the right massage oil for your skin

Posted by Empress Naturals on

Are you completely clueless when it comes to picking the right oils to be a part of your massage routine? Don't worry, you’re not the only one.

We absolutely love to get regular massages but sometimes the number of oils, kinds of oils, massage types, and all the other minute variables that an expert might know can feel overwhelming.

Going to the spa for a luxurious massage takes these questions straight out of your mind- you simply need to tell your therapist what you want and they’ll take it from there. But what do you do when you want to give yourself a massage at home?

An ultimate guide to pick the right massage oil for your skin

We’re here to break down the terms, categorize the right oils, and lay down the steps you must consider when picking the right oil for your next self-massage!

WHAT’S IN YOUR MASSAGE OILS?

Most massage oils are made from a blend of two things- a carrier oil and an essential oil. Massage oils found in the market are likely to have a combination of multiple carrier and essential oils; each with a specific purpose.

Carrier Oil

The primary oil ingredient that accounts for approximately 90% of the total composition in a massage oil.

Essential oils

Concentrated and fragrant natural oils that have health and wellness advantages. It is used in small quantities and mixed with a carrier oil in small concentrations. Essential oils are far too powerful to be used directly on the skin.

Essential oils should be diluted to a limit of 2% of the overall mixture.

PICK FROM THE MOST POPULAR CARRIER OILS

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is extremely nourishing. It is slightly thicker than other carrier oils and can remain on the skin for extended periods of time, nourishing deeply into the skin for increased penetration.

Useful for :

  • Improving blood circulation
  • Anti-inflammatory and intense moisturization
  • Minimizing pain
  • Reducing swelling.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

While it might feel greasy before it gets absorbed by your skin, coconut oil is extremely light and dissipates quickly, leaving a clean sensory experience. It is extremely nourishing and hydrating without blocking your pores.

Coconut oil is suitable for all skin kinds, including delicate skin. It has a lovely fragrance making it a popular carrier oil amongst experts.

Useful for:

  • Boosting collagen and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties and hydration
  • Fading dark spots or hyperpigmentation
  • Repair skin from sun damage

Apricot Kernel Oil

This Carrier Oil is extracted from the kernels of apricots and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti aging qualities.  Apricot Kernel Oil is high in essential fatty acids and Vitamins A and E, making it ideal for dry, old, or delicate skin.

Useful for:

  • Ideal for sensitive acne-prone skin
  • Anti-inflammatory properties and hydration
  • Improves radiance and softness of skin
  • Powerful anti-aging oil

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil has a lightweight consistency that mirrors the consistency of our skin.  Jojoba is also a non-comedogenic oil, which means it won't clog pores and is therefore ideal for face and head massages. Jojoba is the ideal Carrier Oil for a soothing and nourishing treatment because it is high in Vitamins E and B, minerals, and antioxidants.

Useful for:

  • Regulating sebum
  • Detoxifying your skin
  • Revitalizing congested skin, helps with body acne
  • Nourishing and moisturizing skin

Grapeseed Oil

Useful for:

  • Ideal for dry/sensitive skin
  • Treating sun damage
  • Minimizing signs of aging

Sweet Almond Oil

Because sweet almond oil absorbs quickly, it is an excellent moisturizer. Sweet Almond is a versatile massage oil that will suit all skin types, thanks to its Vitamin A and E components.

Useful for:

  • Great for acne-prone skin
  • Antifungal and antimicrobial properties
  • Intense moisturization
  • Reducing stretch marks, scars and dull skin

PAIR WITH THE RIGHT ESSENTIAL OILS

Lavender Essential Oil

Regarded as among the most popular and adaptable essential oils, lavender is prized for its soothing qualities, as well as its fresh and sweet fragrance profile. The anti-inflammatory properties help the body manage with tension, while the calming, pleasant fragrance promotes rest, making it ideal for unwinding before bed.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Rejuvenating and energizing, eucalyptus can encourage muscular relaxation while also activating your senses. This cooling Essential Oil is said to support cardiovascular health, provide analgesic benefits, and decongest overburdened skin.

Pair with: Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage Essential Oil is balanced and earthy, which contributes to its soothing, stress-relieving qualities. Clary Sage can also help to boost the immune system and alleviate cramps, including those caused by menstruation.

Geranium Essential Oil

The fresh and floral fragrance of Geranium Oil adds to its calming and rejuvenating qualities. Geranium Essential Oil has traditionally been used to promote circulation, strengthen and invigorate the nerves, and serve as an astringent. Geranium is thought to stimulate muscular contraction in massage, which firms the look of muscles and results in a toned body profile.

Peppermint Essential Oil

The sharp, minty, and sweet fragrance of peppermint is invigorating, cooling, and energizing to the body. YOUR MASSAGE OIL CHECKLIST

Identify the purpose of the massage

Even before selecting the appropriate carrier and essential Oils for your massage, it is critical to understand why the massage is being performed. Do you want to unwind?  Or would you prefer something more energizing in the midst of the day?

Consider if you'd like a full-body massage or if you need to focus on a particular region. Certain oils are superior for relieving pain if you are feeling stress or soreness while others are great for relaxation.

What’s your skin type?

Get a massage oil that is suitable for your skin type or all skin types. Make sure it does not contain any chemicals that are irritating to your skin. When selecting a massage oil, consider your particular preferences, skin tone, and skin type.

Absorption rate of the carrier oil

The absorption rate of the carrier oil is an important aspect to consider. Massage treatment benefits from lighter weight oils that require a fair amount of time to absorb.

They minimize the friction between epidermis and palms and enter well into the skin. However, if you prefer, you can choose an oil that absorbs rapidly like Rosehip Seed Oil.

Let the scent guide you

You probably have a scent you prefer above others. Choose a massage oil based on your favorite scents! If you need to unwind but don't like the scent of lavender, there are plenty of other soothing oils to choose from.

Need a little boost in the middle of the day but don't like peppermint? You can look for oils that are just as stimulating but are softer. Experiment with various oil combinations to create a distinct aroma to improve your massage experience!
