GMOs in Skincare: Why should you avoid them?

Posted by Empress Naturals on

It’s no secret that ‘going organic’ has become more or less a trend these days. Everyone and their families are on the track of bettering their health by choosing the right products to consume.

While that is a step in the absolute right direction- as customers, we must remain picky about products we use, it is almost crucial that we read up on what qualifies as organic to avoid clever marketing strategies!

The best place to start is with the infamous “GMOs”. This three letter word, commonly known as Genetically Modified Organisms, was initially associated with food production but has easily found its way into the skincare and beauty industry.

Read on to know more about GMOs and why Empress Naturals chooses to stay away from them!

What are GMOs?

Genetically altered new plants, animals, or microorganisms are referred to as "GMOs," or genetically modified organisms.  Simply put, GMOs refer to organisms whose structure is changed in a laboratory setting.

Can GMOs then be termed as natural? Absolutely not.

In essence, researchers take genes from one species' DNA (such as that of a plant or a certain kind of bacteria) and insert them into DNA of another. It's a procedure that produces synthetic genes and is referred to as genetic modification (GM).

Genetic modification is typically employed to enhance an organism's trait. Plants were the source of some of the earliest GMOS utilized in skincare and cosmetics. To create larger levels of specific chemicals i.e. better efficacy, GMOs are frequently employed in skin care products.

Can GMOs be harmful to your health and skin?

The short answer to this is yes. Numerous studies have shown that GMOs in your food and skincare can cause harm in the long term to your body and skin. It has been found to cause immune-deficiency, accelerated rate of aging, infertility, and other physical problems to internal organs like your digestive system.

Infact there is a wide variety of problems that GMOs can cause on your skin:

  • Clogged pores
  • Inflammation or Acne
  • Skin irritation
  • Allergic reactions

GMOs are mainly found in anti-aging products to help battle accelerating signs of aging with improved efficacy. But no one really talks about the side effects of using GMOs on skin that is already vulnerable and requires the gentlest care.

That’s why we’re here! To help teach you more about what you might be putting on your skin and into your body. Some common GMOs that you can identify in your skincare include:

  • Canola and Soy oils
  • Corn oil
  • Sodium citrate
  • Corn starch
  • Maltodextrins
  • Glycerin
  • Yeast protein
  • Xanthan gum
  • Amino acids
  • Lecithin
  • Vegetable protein

Does Organic mean Non-GMO?

As a customer, this is probably the trickiest part of identifying Non-GMO products. If a product is grown in organic conditions, it should be Non-GMO, right? Well, not always.

Terms like ‘organic’ and ‘all natural’ lack a lot of regulation in the beauty industry in America. While products might claim to be ‘natural’, it may not be the case if they have not been correctly vetted.

In simple terms, ‘organic’ refers to anything grown without the use of external chemicals or fertilizers and definitely GMO-free. But the best way to gauge the credibility of products that are organic, is to check if they are USDA Certified.

The USDA follows extremely stringent protocols to classify a product as organic including regular checks of processes involved in manufacturing a product.

From growing to sourcing of ingredients, every step must be USDA compliant to be deemed as Organic

Simply put, if a product is USDA Certified then you can be sure that it is Non-GMO but the same cannot be said about the reverse. (not to toot our own horn but our Anti-Aging Serums are USDA Certified and absolutely marvelous!)

With Empress Naturals, you’ll never have to be worried about GMOs!

No GMOs. No parabens. No artificial fragrances. No sulfates. No silicones. No synthetic dyes. No harsh preservatives. Not tested on animals.

We are not here to convince you that we're the only skin care line to use and every other brand is horrible. However, our primary concern is that customers need to be careful about what they put on and in their bodies.

If there are no companies out there that are transparent in their processes, all the innovation and cutting-edge research won't amount to much.
